Love your taste! Is the rusty swatch an Ikea fabric too? I've seen the B&W one there.

This is a project we're undertaking soon too, so I'll be following along. Our cabinets are oak (ugh) but in nice shape, so we'll just be adding moulding, new countertops and an extention on the peninsula if we can match anything. We did vinyl tiles on the floor when we moved in - we did have white vinyl with blue flowers - so that's one step down.

Budget renovations suck but are so totally worth it in the end.

Black appliances: Craigslist.

Do I like black? Sure. Are people replacing black with stainless just because ? Also sure. Hooray for fickle people with money!

Couple of things I've run across...There is a type of laminate counter top made by WilsonArt that looks like granite. It has depth and shine...It's called WilsonArt HD. http://www.wilsonart.com/hd/default.aspx

It's much more interesting than regular laminate...maybe that would give you the feeling of an upgrade without the price!

Also, if you can hold out on the appliances until October, that is when the "model year" is over. You will be able to find TONS of appliances on sale at Lowe's and Home Depot. Also see if there is a Sears Appliance Outlet near you. They will have "dent and scratch" appliances for extremely cheap! Just pay attention to the dents and and scratches and if they can be hidden in your kitchen (i.e. scratch is on the left side of fridge...will the left side be against a counter, or where people can see it).

Have no fear! You can do it!! :)
