Hi, Jen!

You’ll want to add both length and width to accomodate the bump. Does the shirt pattern have gathers? If you’re making it maternity plus adding gathers that aren’t in the original pattern, definitely make sure you add at least 5” width. Also be sure to add length in the front, redrawing a curve from the new lowest point about 1-2” down on the fold to the old side seam line.

I love it! I know this is an older post but I was hoping you could answer me a question. I am working on a pattern and altering the shirt to be a dress, well how do you compensate for the belly? Do you add length and if so how if your going to gather at the top? Or do you add width? Thanks for the help.

Um.. wtf is a placket? I sew n stuff and probably used/made/found one or two in my years but.. yeah, I kinda go by instinct and looking at other stuff so I’m severely lacking in the lingo. I’ll google it so don’t bother with a response.
